Indian Doctors Forced to Leave Bulgaria Due to Visa Issues

Two Indian doctors working at a hospital in Pernik, Bulgaria, are set to leave the country after failing to obtain the necessary work visas.

Emil Nenkov, Director of the Rahila Angelova Multi-profile Hospital for Active Treatment in Pernik, confirmed the news, stating that the two Indian nationals did not possess work visas, which are mandatory for foreign workers in the Schengen Area. According to Nenkov, an inspection by Bulgarian migration authorities revealed that the doctors had applied for student visas instead of work visas.

Both doctors graduated from the Medical University in Pleven and have until the end of March to voluntarily leave Bulgaria. However, Nenkov emphasized that the hospital is taking steps to facilitate their return and ensure their stay in the country becomes legal.

Rising Demand for Indian Medical Workers in the EU

The number of Indian medical professionals in the European Union is expected to grow as countries like France, Finland, Italy, Germany, and Ireland anticipate a record influx of students and workers.

EU nations are increasingly welcoming Indian workers and students, especially as traditional destinations like the UK, the US, and Canada adopt stricter immigration policies. Despite efforts to control net migration, EU countries continue to face significant labour shortages, particularly in the healthcare and IT sectors.

Germany’s Push to Attract Indian Skilled Workers

Germany, for instance, plans to issue 90,000 visas to skilled Indian workers, a significant increase from the current 20,000. These visas will primarily target professionals in IT, nursing, and caregiving—sectors experiencing acute labour shortages.

To streamline the process, Germany has reduced visa processing times from nine months to just two weeks. Additionally, the country has relaxed language requirements, lowered salary thresholds, and eased educational qualifications to attract more skilled workers. These measures aim to address the 570,000 job vacancies currently unfilled in Germany.

Bulgaria’s Work Permit Trends

Last year, Bulgaria granted over 36,000 work permits to foreign nationals, reflecting the country’s efforts to address labour shortages. However, the case of the two Indian doctors highlights the importance of adhering to visa regulations.
