China Grants Over 50,000 Visas to Indian Citizens in 2025

The Chinese Embassy and consulates in India have issued more than 50,000 visas to Indian citizens as of March 17, 2025, marking a significant increase in travel between the two nations.

Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, attributed this surge to simplified travel rules for Indian nationals. In a statement, he highlighted measures such as the removal of online appointment requirements, exemptions from biometric collection for short-term stays, and reduced visa fees.

Ambassador Xu Feihong said, “Measures have been taken to make it easier to visit China, such as no online appointments, biometric collection exemptions for short-term stays, and reduced visa fees. As flowers blossom in spring, we welcome more Indian friends to visit China and experience its beauty firsthand.”

Since China and India do not have a visa-free travel agreement, Indian travelers must obtain a visa before visiting China for tourism or business purposes. Applicants are required to visit Chinese embassies or visa application centers to complete the process.

Resumption of Direct Flights Between China and India
In addition to streamlined visa rules, the resumption of direct flights between China and India is expected to further boost travel and strengthen ties between the two countries.

In January 2025, both nations agreed to restart direct flights after a five-year halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the agreement was reached during a high-level envoy’s visit to China.

The ministry stated, “The relevant technical authorities on both sides will meet and negotiate an updated framework for this purpose at an early date.”

Before the pandemic, approximately 500 direct flights operated monthly between China and India, according to Moneycontrol.

Surge in Foreign Visitors Following Visa-Free Policies
China has seen a sharp rise in foreign visitors following the introduction of visa-free travel agreements with several countries.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of foreign visitor entries reached 26.94 million in 2024, with international tourism revenue totaling $94.2 billion. This represents a 95.5% increase in visitor numbers and a 77.8% rise in revenue compared to 2023.

Last year, China extended its unilateral visa-free policy to several countries, allowing eligible nationals to travel to China without a visa from November 2024 until December 31, 2025.
